Betfair Becomes Sponsor of ‘Kingmaker Day’
BETFAIR is the new sponsor of ‘Kingmaker Day’ at Warwick on Saturday 11 February.
The Kingmaker at Warwick Racecourse is renowned for producing top Cheltenham Festival horses and is to be sponsored for the first time this season by Betfair.
Two years ago, the current Cheltenham Gold Cup holder Long Run won the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase. Last year’s hero was Finian’s Rainbow, a leading fancy for this year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase.
‘Betfair Kingmaker day’ this year is on Saturday 11 February and promises to be a cracking day of jump racing at the Midlands racecourse.
‘The Kingmaker’ – run over two miles each February – is named after the 16th Earl of Warwick, one of the top military commanders during the medieval War of the Roses who was responsible for the deposition of two monarchs.
Huw Williams, managing director of Warwick Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to welcome Betfair as the new sponsor for Kingmaker Day which is not only one of the highlights of the racecourse’s calendar but also of the jump racing season as a whole in Britain.
“We have watched some tremendous horses taking part in the feature race in recent times, not only Finian’s Rainbow and Long Run but also – in 2008 – Big Buck’s whose long unbeaten record now stretches back three years.”
Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin said: “We are delighted to have secured the sponsorship of such a prestigious and high profile meeting as Kingmaker Day at Warwick Racecourse on 11 February.
“Given that we are also sponsoring the whole Newbury card as a part of ‘Betfair Super Saturday’ on 11 February, this association ensures that we are backing all the terrestrial television races on this day.
“It also cements my belief that we are set - if we are not already - to become the most significant bookmaking sponsor in the sport in 2012; certainly our 2012 horseracing sponsorship portfolio has never been bigger in Betfair’s 12-year history and Warwick is a very welcome addition to that.”
